The PG & Research Department of Botany and Nutrition and dietetics celebrated International world forest day on " Biodiversity Conservation" on 21st March 2025, at 10:30 AM. The programme aimed to enlighten students about the importance of Biodiversity conservation as well as the employment opportunities available in Indian Forest Services for those who are completed from Botany courses.
The programme commenced with a warm welcome address by Dr. M. Meenakshisundaram, Head of the department,Botany Following this, the presidential address was delivered by Er. Pon. Balasubramanian, President of the college committee. Dr.A.Venkatesan, Principal and Dr.K.T.Tamilmani,Vice Principal also shared their felicitations, emphasizing the importance of Forest and conservation.
The key highlight of the event was a special lecture delivered by Mr.P.Sornappan.Deputy conservator of forests (Retired) Environmental consultant with Extensive forest, Wild life and Ecotourism Management.
1. *Need for Awareness:Highlighted the importance of raising awareness about the significance of biodiversity and the threats it faces.
2. Sustainable Practices: He emphasized the need for sustainable practices, such as eco-friendly agriculture, reduced consumption, and waste management.
3.Technology in Conservation: He discussed the role of technology, including GIS mapping and AI in wildlife monitoring, in conservation efforts.
4.*Conservation Efforts and Legal Framework:He outlined key conservation efforts, such as Project Tiger (1973) and Project Elephant (1992), and the legal framework that supports them.
5.Major Biodiversity Hotspots in India: He identified key biodiversity hotspots in India, including the Western Ghats and the Himalayas.
6.Threats to Biodiversity:discussed the major threats to biodiversity, including habitat destruction, climate change, and pollution.
Students from UG/PG Botany,UG nutrition and dietitics had the opportunity to interact with the guest speakers. This interactive session allowed students to clarify their doubts and deepen their understanding of various strategies for Environmental Protection acts.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Ms.R.Bavani, Assistant professor,Nutrition and Dietitics. She expressed gratitude to the guest speakers, faculty members, and students for their active participation. The event was attended by 100 students.Dr.R.Madharasi Assistant Professor of Botany hosted a programme in a grand success.
