An awareness program on crimes against women and the use of the Kavalan mobile application was conducted at Nehru Memorial College, Puthanampatti, Tiruchirappalli District, on Thursday, 27th March 2025. The event was held at the Mookapillai Auditorium on the college campus and began at 10:30 AM.
The event was presided over by the College Chairman, Engineer Pon. Balasubramanian. The inaugural address was delivered by the College Secretary, Mr. Pon. Ravichandran. The special guest was Mr. S. Selvanagarathinam, Superintendent of Police, Tiruchirappalli District, who delivered a keynote address. In his speech, he emphasized that the main cause of increasing crimes in the country is a lack of awareness.
He noted that ignorance is the root cause of the rise in crimes in society. Today, the media provides an overwhelming amount of information, and individuals must develop the discernment to differentiate between what is necessary and unnecessary. Cybercrimes are on the rise, and people should be cautious in financial transactions.
Another major issue he addressed was road safety. He said India's biggest strength is its large population, and if the working-age population contributes effectively, the nation can progress. However, around 200,000 people die in road accidents in India annually, with Tamil Nadu recording the highest number of such fatalities. Students should encourage their parents to follow traffic rules.
He stressed that achieving goals requires hard work. Girls should avoid early marriages, especially during their educational years.
The speaker also cautioned that many young people are falling into drug addiction due to carelessness, lack of awareness, and bad peer influence, which leads to ruined lives. He urged students to stay away from such habits and answered their questions during the session.
Before the program, the police department staged a play demonstrating how the Kavalan App functions and how complaints are handled. Officers explained how to download and use the Kavalan App. They also educated the audience on identifying crimes against women and the proper procedure to file complaints. Pamphlets containing this information were distributed by the police.
Participants in the program included college committee member Mrs. Mala Balasubramanian, Vice Principal Dr. K.T. Tamilmani, department heads, faculty members, non-teaching staff, and students. The event began with a welcome address by the Principal, Dr. A. Venkatesan. The vote of thanks was delivered by Assistant Professor of Commerce, Ms. I. Sumathi. The event was coordinated by Mrs. I. Sumathi (Women's Welfare Officer), Dr. G. Balasubramanian (National Service Scheme Officer), and Dr. A. Prabhu (National Cadet Corps Officer).
