Industrial Visit to IIT MADRAS OPEN HOUSE 2026 on 3rd January 2026, Chennai

The Department of Data Science organized a curriculum-based Industrial Visit to IIT Madras Open House 2026, Chennai, on 3rd January 2026. A total of 69 undergraduate students and 7 postgraduate students participated in the visit, accompanied by three faculty members—Mrs. N. Kalpana, Assistant Professor and Head, Department of Data Science; Mrs. S. Indiani; and Ms. K. Dharani, Department of Data Science.

The IIT Madras Open House 2026, held from 2nd to 4th January 2026 as part of Shaastra 2026, offered public access to over 100 laboratories, research projects, and technology demonstrations under the theme “Anaivarukkum IITM” (IIT Madras for All). The event featured numerous stalls showcasing live innovations aimed at inspiring students and the general public, with prior registration.

During the visit, students attended an interactive session conducted by a technology expert and a startup representative, focusing on emerging technologies and innovation-driven learning. A live demonstration of drone technology was conducted, during which:

A mini drone prototype was showcased The basic components of the drone, including motors, propellers, controller board, and sensors, were explained Various applications of drones in data collection, aerial imaging, surveillance, agriculture, disaster management, and research were discussed The session highlighted the integration of Data Science, Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence, and Embedded Systems in modern drone technology. Students gained valuable practical exposure to real-world technological applications, enabling them to relate classroom learning with industry and research practices. Students also visited R2D2 – the TTK Center for Rehabilitation Research and Device Development at IIT Madras, is actively involved in research on human movement and the design and development of rehabilitation and assistive technologies for individuals with movement impairments.

In addition, projects were showcased by departments and research centers such as the Combat Vehicles Research & Development Establishment (CVRDE), National Center for Safety of Heritage Structures, and Marine Autonomous Systems, highlighting cutting-edge research and real-world problem-solving approaches.

The students also learned about NIRMAAN – The Pre-Incubator at IIT Madras, which promotes innovation and entrepreneurship by providing technical guidance, business mentorship, and support to students and early-stage innovators.

Overall, the industrial visit provided students with comprehensive exposure to research, innovation, entrepreneurship, and interdisciplinary applications, making it a highly enriching and impactful learning experience.

In addition, students visited Marina Beach, Kalaignar Ulagam showcasing AI-based immersive technology, and the Jayalalithaa Memorial, which added cultural and experiential value to the visit.

Conclusion

The curriculum-based industrial visit to IIT Madras Open House 2026 proved to be a highly enriching learning experience for the students of the Department of Data Science. The visit successfully exposed students to advanced research environments, emerging technologies, and innovation ecosystems, enabling them to understand the practical relevance of concepts learned in the classroom.

Through interactions with researchers, startup representatives, and live technology demonstrations, students gained insights into career pathways in data science, artificial intelligence, IoT, robotics, and interdisciplinary research. The exposure to incubation centers and rehabilitation research initiatives further motivated students to explore higher education, research opportunities, innovation, and entrepreneurship.

This visit has encouraged students to develop analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and research-oriented attitudes, which are essential for their future academic and professional growth. Overall, the experience has laid a strong foundation for students to pursue advanced studies, industry roles, startups, and socially impactful technological solutions in the field of Data Science.
