
The Department of English at Nehru Memorial College (Autonomous), Puthanampatti, organized an educational field visit to The Hindu Daily office in Trichy on January 7, 2026. The purpose of this visit was to give students practical exposure to the newspaper industry, print media, and the field of journalism. A total of fifteen I BA English students and two II MA English students visited the daily office.
Mr Laxman, Senior Advertisement Officer, offered a cordial welcome to the students and the faculty. Mr. K. Venkatesan, AGM (Advertisement), gave an insightful talk on the structure and operations of the newspaper industry. He emphasized on the importance of advertisements as a major source of revenue for newspapers and explained how advertising content is planned, designed, and published. Mr. Venkatesan also provided a detailed explanation of the journalism process. He talked about how news is collected, verified, written, edited, and finally published. He introduced the students to various journalistic positions, such as Editor, Sub-editor, Reporter, and Correspondent. The session also covered different types of journalism, including print journalism, digital journalism, and investigative journalism. Mr. Venkatesan offered valuable advice on how to become a journalist, stressing the importance of education, writing skills, ethics, and professional commitment. He also elaborated on the job opportunities available in the newspaper and media industries.
Mr. C. Kathiravan, AGM (Printing), and his technical team spoke to the students about the use of technology in printing and other production processes. Mr. S. Baskar, Junior Engineer (Printing), and Mr. R. Manoraj, Junior Engineer (Printing), demonstrated the modern machinery used in newspaper printing. They explained the coloring process, including the CMYK color model (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black), and how light theory is applied in additive colors (RGB). They also described the scanning process, explaining the steps of Collection, Preparation, Scanning, and Sharing.
The plating process was then discussed, along with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and the ideal newspaper paper density of 50 gsm. The session also highlighted how advanced technology ensures speed, accuracy, and high quality in newspaper production. Students learned about the printing process, including plate preparation, ink application, and paper feeding systems.
A special focus was given to color printing, where students learned how colors are produced in newspapers and how high-quality colored pages are achieved. The team also explained the paper manufacturing process and the stages involved in producing colored newspaper sheets. After the interactive sessions, the students were taken on a guided tour to the production unit. They observed the entire newspaper production process, from the news layout to the final printing stage. The field visit proved to be highly informative and beneficial. It helped students understand the newspaper industry, journalism practices, printing technology, and career opportunities in the media, while linking classroom learning with real-world experience.
The Department of English organized the visit, with Mrs. R. Durga Dharani, Assistant Professor of English, accompanying the students.
