The Department of Data Science organized a career-focused seminar titled "The Data Science Launchpad: Unlock Your Professional Potential" on 29th July 2025 (Tuesday) at 10:00 a.m. in ICT Hall – II. The session was attended by 85 participants, comprising students from B.Sc Data Science and M.Sc. Data Science.
Mrs. N. Kalpana, Head of the Department of Data Science, extended a warm welcome to the dignitaries, guest speaker, faculty members, and student participants. In her address, she emphasized the relevance of the seminar topic in today’s evolving tech landscape. She expressed her gratitude to the management for their constant encouragement and highlighted that such sessions act as vital stepping stones for students, helping them understand industry demands and align their learning accordingly. She acknowledged the presence of the chief guest, Dr. S. Premanand, and appreciated his willingness to share valuable insights with budding data scientists. She also encouraged students to be active participants and make the most of the seminar.
Dr. K.T. Tamilmani, Vice Principal, and Dr. M. Meenakshisundaram, SF Stream Coordinator, shared their words of encouragement and emphasized the importance of soft skills along with technical proficiency. The resource person for the session was Dr. S. Premanand, Director – Learning and Development, COO, Researcher, Author, Motivational Speaker, and Entrepreneur Coach. The primary objective of the session was to create awareness among students about the current trends, challenges, and career paths in the field of Data Science.
The session began with a discussion on the biggest career concerns in Data Science as perceived by students, followed by a structured presentation by the guest speaker on key themes such as the importance of Data Science in the corporate world, real-world problems that data science can solve, and how various companies leverage data science technologies. Students were asked to name a company and identify at least three practical data science applications used in that organization, promoting critical thinking and real-world alignment.
Dr. Premanand further emphasized the global recognition of Data Science by discussing its long-term career scope over the next 10 to 15 years, high salary potential, and salary benchmarks across experience levels. He also outlined a detailed career progression framework for data science professionals, highlighting specialized career tracks such as Data Analyst, Machine Learning Engineer, Data Scientist, and AI Researcher. In addition, he provided a comprehensive skills development roadmap, guiding students on the technical and soft skills required to succeed in the industry.
A hands-on team activity followed, where students worked collaboratively to design large chart-based presentations using visual elements such as graphs, flow diagrams, and key insights. Each team member presented individually, showcasing their understanding of the topic and their ability to communicate effectively. This exercise not only tested their technical knowledge but also enhanced their teamwork, communication, and presentation skills.
Overall, the session was highly interactive and insightful, offering students valuable guidance for career planning, skill development, and industry preparedness. The event received positive feedback from the participants. The Department plans to organize more such seminars as part of its ongoing value-added and career-enrichment initiatives.
Ms. Gayathri of II B.Sc Data Science and Mr. Ramesh of II M.Sc Data Science shared their feedback. Vote of Thanks proposed by Mrs. S.Indirani, Assistant Professor, Department of Data Science.
